Browns Summit or Brown Summit is a rural unincorporated area in the northern portion of Guilford County, North Carolina. Browns Summit is located northeast of Greensboro off U.S. Highway 29. Since Browns Summit is not incorporated or chartered, there are no established or legally defined borders.

The name “Browns Summit” originated from the Richmond & Danville Railroad and the Piedmont Railroad. The railroad crossed the land owned by Jesse Brown, and it was the highest point above sea level on the rail line. The railroad established a train station there in 1871 and named it “Brown’s Summit.” Over time the apostrophe was dropped.    

The first United States post office opened in Browns Summit on August 4, 1871. The first postmaster was Franklin G. Chilcutt.

A major train wreck of the Richmond and Danville Railroad occurred near the Browns Summit Station on Tuesday Morning, September 12, 1876. The engine and tender of the northbound fast mail train passed over a broken rail, and all the following railcars, with the exception of the last sleeper car, were derailed down a thirty-to-forty-foot embankment. Over 150 passengers, many women, and a few children were on the train, on their way to visit the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. It was deemed nothing short of a miracle that no one lost their life and that so few, less than twenty, were seriously injured in the massive wreck.  

At the Reedy Fork Creek train trestle, around two miles south of Browns Summit, on December 15, 1909, a Southern Railway train plunged twenty-five into Reedy Creek. The train was the Southern Railway southbound local Train No. 11, known as the Richmond and Atlantic train. The train was made up of an engine, tender, two baggage, two express, and two mail cars, three daycoaches, and two Pullmans. The engine, tender, baggage, and express cars passed over in safety, and the three day-coaches and two Pullman cars plunged twenty-five feet off the trestle into the mud and water of Reedy Creek. Twelve people were killed, with over two dozen seriously injured.

An Overview of Guilford County 

Rowan County was once a mega county established in 1753 from Anson County. To reduce Rowan County’s size, Guilford County was created in 1771 from an eastern section of Rowan County. To reduce Guilford County even further, the southern one-third of Guilford County was allotted in 1779 to create Randolph County. The northern section of Guilford County was allotted in 1785 to create Rockingham County. The county seat with all the county administrative functions and the courthouse were all located at Guilford Court House settlement until 1808, when this was all moved to Greensboro.

Guilford County was named when North Carolina was a Royal Colony and was named in honor of the Earl of Guilford, Francis North. North was the father of Frederick North, Lord North. Lord North was the Prime Minister of Britain from 1770 until 1782. 

Native Americans have prospered in the Piedmont region for thousands of years. This is supported by archeological excavations throughout the Piedmont region. The first documented inhabitants of what would become Guilford County were the Cheraw Indians and the Keyauwee Indians. Both Native American tribes were Siouan-speaking, which was a prevalent language of Native Americans in the Carolinas. The 1715 Carolina Census of Native Americans approximated the Cheraw Indians at around 200 and the Keyauwee Indians at around 100.  

Settlers of European descent began arriving in the future Guilford County in the early 1700s. However, settlers did not begin arriving in large numbers until the mid-1700s. The majority of these settlers traveled down the “Great Wagon Road” from Pennsylvania. These settlers were American Quakers, British Quakers, German Reformed, German Lutherans, and a large percentage of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. There was a small percentage of African American slaves among these early settlers as well. Some of these Quakers traveled up from Charleston, South Carolina, instead of the Great Wagon Road. 

The majority of these early settlers to the future Guilford County were primarily subsistence farmers. These were subsistence farmers, living on and working on small tracks of land. Because of the size of most farms and resources, farmers were limited to the number of livestock that could be cultivated as well.

In almost all writings on warfare, the term “turning point” and the term “significant battle” have a tendency to be overused. However, an American Revolutionary battle took place in Guilford County that was a significant battle and was a turning point, the Battle of Guilford Court House. The Battle of Guilford Court House took place on March 15, 1781. Ironically, this battle may have been a tactical victory for the British. However, it was a strategic defeat for the British. The Battle of Guilford Court House was a Pyrrhic victory for the British, from which they were unable to recover.

The settlement of Guilford Court House is now within the city limits of Greensboro. At this time, it was the county seat and the location of the county courthouse. The Battle of Guilford Court House developed as the largest to take place during Continental Army Major General Nathanael Greene’s Southern Campaign. Greene’s force of around 4,500-men comprised approximately one-third well-trained Continental Army troops and around two-thirds inadequately trained militia members. 

Lieutenant General Lord Charles Cornwallis commanded the British force at Guilford Court House. His smaller force of around 2,100-men was better trained and equipped. The force was comprised almost entirely of experienced regular British soldiers.  

Even being outnumbered more than two to one, Cornwallis’ force defeated Greene’s forces. The Patriots withdrew from the battlefield, and the British commanded the battlefield after the battle. While the British commanded the battlefield, the “victory” came at a significant cost to Cornwallis in casualties. Over 25% of the 2,100-man British force were casualties. A hard reality of being a British soldier during this time period was that some of the British casualties were the result of deliberate friendly fire. The friendly fire was in the form of cannon “grapeshot,” which had been ordered intentionally by General Cornwallis himself. He reportedly ordered this fire into both British and Patriot troops to clear the battlefield. This battle can be summed up best by a British member of parliament who was a staunch opponent of the war, Charles James Fox. He said in response to Cornwallis’ “victory” at the Battle of Guilford Court House, “Another such victory would ruin the British Army!” 

Greene had fewer casualties. However, his strategy of hit-and-run attacks with the British were successful. Greene knew his forces would not be able to stand up to a long-drawn-out battle with Cornwallis. The result of the battle was that the British were severely weakened. This British “victory” undermined Cornwallis’ forces to such a magnitude that this led to the British surrender at Yorktown on October 19, 1781. 

Arden has seen much of the Asheville area’s recent expansion and real estate development because the ground in this portion of the county is more gradually sloping (almost flat in some spots). Established in 1927, Oak Park Historic District is located in Arden. Construction was interrupted by the stock market crash of 1929 and the resulting Great Depression. There are around 15 homes of the period in this historic district today.

Arden is home to the 500-acre campus Christ School. Christ School was founded in Arden in 1900 by the Reverend Thomas Cogdill Wetmore. It was established on the site of an old plantation that was called Struan. The school was originally open to boys and girls in the mountain region of North Carolina. It was mainly an industrial trade school, and tuition was paid through the student’s work. The trade curriculum includes carpentry and telegraphy. Bookkeeping is taught to complement the trade curriculum for the students. As the public school system in the area was established in 1928, Christ School switched its focus.
