The City of Mooresville can trace its origin back to 1856 when the railroad took right of way through the farm of John Franklin Moore. Moore established a depot on his land and encouraged others to settle on the site around the depot. The site became known as “Moore’s Siding.” John Franklin Moore incorporated the town in 1873 and it formally became known as Mooresville. Moore built some of the brick buildings on what is now known as Main Street. A new train depot was constructed in 1883 along with new railway lines. The growth of the railroad brought further growth to Mooresville. Textile production increased in the early 1900s to become the town’s leading industry. As the textile industry declined in the 1980s due to less expensive foreign textile manufacturing options, NASCAR and Lake Norman became the main economic drivers of the Mooresville economy.

Iredell County’s population in the 1790 US Census was 5,430. The population in Iredell County in the 2010 Census was 159,437, with the estimated population in 2019 being 181,806. In the early 20th Century textile manufacturing became the prominent economic driver. With the decline of the textile industry, the development and construction of the Cowans Ford Dam from 1959 to 1964, brought Lake Norman to be a major economic driver. Mooresville slowly became a vacation destination and a bedroom community for Charlotte. The 1980s and 1990s brought NASCAR teams and the related businesses to Mooresville.
