Greenville, South Carolina, or the City of Greenville is nestled in the South Carolina Upstate. Greenville County in which the City of Greenville is located was found in 1786. Greenville County was reportedly named for American Revolutionary War Continental Army Major General Nathanael Greene, known as the Quaker General. Named in tribute to Major General Greene’s successful leadership of the Continental Army and the American Patriots in the South during the American Revolution.  

The City of Greenville was founded as the Village of Greenville on December 17, 1831. The 1850 US Census population was 1,305 people. Today, Greenville is the largest city in the South Carolina Upstate with a 2010 US Census population of 58,409, and a 2019 population estimate with just more than 70,000 people. Greenville County had a US Census 2010 population of 451,225 people. It is estimated that the 2019 Greenville County population is just in excess of 523,000 people.

Greenville’s economy was largely based on textiles up until the 1980s. At this time, Greenville’s industrial composition has slowing changed as the textile industry has seen significant domestic manufacturing decreases due to foreign competition. The textile economy has been slowly outpaced by automotive, electronics, healthcare, and heavy manufacturing related industries. The largest two employers in Greenville are Michelin and Prisma Healthcare.

Greenville is strategically located halfway between Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC on Interstate 85.  Greenville is serviced by Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP).  Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is serviced by Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta,  Silver Airways, Southwest, and United. Greenville has an Amtrak station with regular service.

The educational systems in the Greenville area are well rated from primary, secondary, through collegiate. Furman University, Bob Jones University, and North Greenville University are local four-year universities for advanced learning, and all have collegiate sports programs.  

Greenville’s Peace Center for the Performing Arts is one of the regions centers for cultural life. The Peace Center is composed of a concert hall, theater, and amphitheater. The Bon Secours Wellness Arena, with a capacity of 16,000 people, is Greenville’s hub for large music concerts.  There are two art museums, Greenville County Museum of Art and Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery.  Both museums representing a diverse collection of artworks. The Greenville Symphony Orchestra and The Carolina Ballet Theatre regularly put on performances. Greenville has been named to the list of “Top 100 Arts Small Towns in the United States.”
