Buncombe County, North Carolina

Buncombe County was created in 1791 from portions of Burke County and Rutherford County. The original configuration of Buncombe County, 1791 to 1808, reached all the way to the Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina borders. Since its formation, Buncombe County has been reduced numerous times to create or add areas to new counties.

The county is named for American Revolutionary War Hero Colonel Edward Buncombe (1742-1778). Colonel Buncombe was a plantation owner from what is now Washington County, North Carolina. He was an early leading supporter and organizer of the independence moment within North Carolina. Three days after Halifax Assembly passed the historic Halifax Resolves, he was appointed colonel of the 5th North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Army on April 15, 1776.

At the Battle of Germantown, Colonel Buncombe was captured after being wounded on October 4, 1777. He was paroled by the British Army to Philadelphia, which the British had recently seized. The British army paroled him to that city. Colonel Buncombe fell down a flight of steps, reopening his prior wounds, resulting in him bleeding to death.

The Buncombe County government first met in April 1792 in a barn that was located on what would become the Biltmore Estate a little under a century later. This barn was owned by Colonel William Davidson. Colonel Davidson was the cousin of American Revolutionary War General William Lee Davidson, who died at the Battle of Cowan’s Ford in 1781.

Before Buncombe County had a county seat, deeds were filed in Morganton, in Burke County, because it was the nearest county seat. Because of poor roads and winter weather conditions, a centralized location for Buncombe County’s seat of power needed to be found. A committee of seven men convened to find and select a county seat for the courthouse in December 1792.

The county seat was selected in 1793 and named “Morristown.” Morristown was situated on a plateau where two old Indian trails crossed. In 1797, Morristown was chartered and renamed “Asheville” after North Carolina Governor Samuel Ashe. The first courthouse was located at the present-day Pack Square in Asheville.

The first United States Census for Buncombe County was the 1800 Census, and the population was determined to be 5,812. T

The 2000 United States Census for Buncombe County was determined to be 206,330.

The 2010 United States Census for Buncombe County was determined to be 238,318.

The 2020 United States Census for Buncombe County was determined to be 269,452.

This was a population increase of 23.4% between the 2000 and 2020 census.

Buncombe County’s land area per the United States Census Bureau in 2010 was 660 square miles.
