Five Forks, South Carolina Facts & Information

Five Forks, S.C. is an unincorporated area within Greenville County. Five Forks being an unincorporated area, has no formal or established borders or “municipal” limits. However, the United States Census Bureau has designated Five Forks as a census-designated place or a CDP. While there are no legally established borders for Five Forks, the United States Census Bureau set forth the area that is deemed to be the census-designated place.

What has been set forth by the United States Census Bureau as Five Forks census-designated place has a total land area of 7.57 square miles as of 2010. It is important to note that a census-designated place could possibly not agree with what local residents believe the area encompasses. Local residents may believe the community is smaller or larger than what the United States Census Bureau is calculating or measuring. The United States Census Bureau utilizes different elements in establishing a census-designated place, with typically the primary determining factor being a population concentration. A large population concentration is probably what was taken into account in the establishment of the Five Forks census-designated place.

Five Forks is a suburb of Greenville. The City of Mauldin is northwest of the Five Forks area. State Roads 146 and 296 and County Roads 164 and 145 run through the Five Forks Community. Niche.com in 2019, out of 190 best places in South Carolina, selected Five Forks as the best place to live and second-best place to raise a family

The Five Forks name originates from being the location of a confluence of five roads. The main road is the Woodruff Road which is the primary east-west artery through Five Forks. The Batesville Road, Scuffletown Road, Bennetts Bridge Road, and the Five Forks Road comprise the other four roads.

Development in Five Forks is a relatively recent event; the area was rural up until the late 1990s. The economic and population growth in Greenville brought commuters to Five Points. Housing was followed by retail shopping, service businesses, restaurants, and entertainment establishments.

Five Forks has become known for the community’s excellent schools. Excellent state test scores and excellent teachers seem to be the norm in Five Forks schools. The majority of schools are modern and less than twenty years old.

Population Growth, Congestion, & Infrastructure

Population growth and all the related issues that come along with population growth have impacted the Five Forks area for the past twenty-five years. From the first census, the 2000 United States Census, up to the most recent census, the 2020 United States Census, the population of Five Forks has more than doubled.

Census Pop. %±

2000 8,064 —

2010 14,140 75.3%

2020 17,737 25.4%

Traffic congestion began to become a major problem in the early 2000s. Funding for road improvements was slow to materialize. However, road improvements and upgrades began to take hold in the 2010s. A current major roadwork project is the Woodruff Road Congestion Relief Project.

Other infrastructure items such as schools struggled to keep up with the population growth. Brand new schools would open and would immediately be filled to capacity. The very next year, the same school would have twice the number of students ready to enroll.

As a result of public outcries, the Greenville County Commission has greatly addressed these infrastructure concerns. Roads and schools seem to be keeping up with the population growth. The State of South Carolina is keeping up with population growth as well.
