Buying A Home In Flat Rock

Purchasing a home is more than simply a status symbol; it is the gateway to long-term and short-term economic success. A home is an investment that, if made correctly, will provide many returns. Long-term, hopefully, equity is created through appreciation, and in the short term, there are advantages of prospective tax benefits. Furthermore, the adage, better to pay a mortgage than to pay rent.

Owning a home can significantly impact an individual’s financial prospects, especially for a first-time homebuyer. While purchasing a home may be a life-changing event for anyone, it can also be beneficial financially due to home equity. Hopefully, and typically in most real estate markets over time, home values increase. As neighborhoods are built and become more established, homeowners make positive modifications to their homes, improving overall home values. This is one of the many benefits of living within a homeowner association with covenants. The Village of Flat Rock is a beautiful place, just three miles south of Hendersonville and around 30 miles south of Asheville. The first recorded inhabitants of the Flat Rock area were the Cherokee people. The Cherokee people were known for their commerce and trading abilities. Flat Rock was a rallying point or trading place for the Cherokee and traders of European descent before colonization of the region and the forced resettlement of many of the Cherokee people.

The first recorded land records for Flat Rock indicating any type of settlement were in 1807. Shortly after that, Flat Rock developed into a summer resort-type area for the wealthy low country Charleston plantation owners. During the summer months, the wealthy of the South Carolina low county would seek refuge from the heat and malaria-carrying mosquitoes. So much so that Flat Rock became known as the “Little Charleston of the Mountains.” Initially, modest summer houses were constructed, with these being replaced with more elaborate mansions to better represent the expensive tastes of the summer inhabitants from Charleston. Many of these historic homes still exist within the village, are included in the Flat Rock Historic District, and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
