Garden City, South Carolina, and sometimes known as Garden City Beach, is an unincorporated area in the lowermost eastern portion of Horry County. The United States Census Bureau classifies Garden City as a census-designated place or a CDP.

Being unincorporated and a census-designated place, there are no officially established or identified borders of a CDP other than what the United States Census Bureau has defined.

Established by the United States Census Bureau, the census-designated place for Little River has a total area of 5.37 square miles. The area established as the census-designated place by the United States Census Bureau may not be consistent with what residents of the census-designated place believe the area’s boundaries are. Different factors go into establishing a census-designated place by the United States Census Bureau. In most cases, census-designated places are established because of concentrations of population, such as what is reflected within the Garden City CDP.

Garden City is an unincorporated area situated in eastern Horry County. Horry District was created in 1801 from the northern portion of Georgetown District. Horry District was named in honor of local American Revolutionary War hero Peter Horry. In 1868, Horry District became Horry County when the South Carolina Legislature changed Districts to Counties. Kingston was established as the county seat. Kingston’s name was changed to Conwayborough in honor of General Robert Conway, a local hero. The South Carolina General Assembly changed the name from “Conwayborough” to “Conway” in 1883.

The Garden City area is the furthest southern point in Horry County of the “The Grand Strand” of the coastline of South Carolina. The Grand Strand is a 60-mile strip that starts at the North Carolina state line, the Little River area of South Carolina, and goes south to Winyah Bay, South Carolina. The Grand Strand comprises the eastern ends of Horry County and Georgetown County.

The term  “Grand Strand” was first used in print in a column on November 19, 1949, The Myrtle Beach Sun, titled “From the Grandstand,” and another column titled “From the Grand Strand” on December 3, 1949, in The Myrtle Beach News. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Grand Strand has evolved into a major east coast tourist destination. The Grand Strand has an abundance of hotels and recreational activities that attract millions of tourists each year.
