Saluda, NC Facts & Information

Rolesville is a municipality situated within the northeastern portion of Wake County, North Carolina. Rolesville is a municipal town charter. Rolesville is the second oldest municipality within Wake County, behind the City of Raleigh. The annual climate of Rolesville would be best depicted as moderate.

The Early History of Rolesville and the Surrounding Area

Rolesville, for the majority of its history, has been a rural farming community. The community is named for a former postmaster and landowner, William H. Roles. William Roles owned a general store called Roles Store and it housed the first post office that opened on February 25, 1825. The post office was in operation under the name “Roles Store” until February 19, 1835. On February 19, 1835, the name of the post office was changed to Rolesville. William Roles was the postmaster. Roles original general store was the town’s meeting hall up until recent years.

As the United States developed with the homesteading of settlers, some settlements just “sprang up.” Settlements seemed to just spring up along old Native American trails adjacent to river fords, mountain passes, railroad stops. Many times, these settlements did not have official names. It was common for a settlement to be known or named after a natural element found in the area or after the founding family’s last name. It was also just as common for a settlement to be named after the postmaster, especially if the mail being delivered needed a delivery location such as “Roles Store.” Many times, this would develop into the name of the community.

In the early days of the United States Post Office Department, it was common that mail was processed and moved by third parties from pickup to delivery. The United States Post Office Department would enter into a contract with a party in a community to accept and deliver mail on behalf of the United States Post Office Department. This party would have the title of postmaster or postmistress.

Between the late 1700s and early 1900s, this third party would usually be the owner of a general store or general merchandise store in a community. The United States Post Office Department would seek to establish a post office within these general stores because they were typically located in population centers. General stores were typically frequented by the population. Vice versa, the third-party owners of these general stores would eagerly seek out a post office contract because of the added consumer traffic it would produce to their store and the additional compensation generated from operating the post office. A great many towns and cities sprang up around general stores with post offices inside.

Along with owning a general store and being postmaster, William H. Roles was also a cotton broker and operated a cotton gin. Roles drafted the map for the town’s charter. In 1835, Roles drew up the yet unincorporated town of Rolesville in 30 lots with a “Market Square” in the center. The lots faced the two main roads that crossed the center of the settlement, the Louisburg-Raleigh Road or the Old Stagecoach Road and the Smithfield Oxford Road. At the time of the founding, Rolesville was 15 miles from Raleigh and 15 miles from Louisburg on the main stage line from Washington, DC to Charleston, South Carolina.

Roles started the settlement’s first school. He was also a deacon and trustee of the Baptist Church. Agriculture was the basis of the early economy as it was through most of the 20th century. Cultivating cotton was the primary crop in the area from the early 1800s through the late 1800s.
