Spartanburg, South Carolina, or the City of Spartanburg, is nestled in the Upstate of South Carolina, the northwestern part of the state. The City of Spartanburg is located in Spartanburg County. Spartanburg County was established in 1785 after the American Revolutionary War. The name Spartanburg came from the area’s local militia unit, the Spartan Regiment, who fought with distinction in the Revolutionary War. The Spartan Regiment was commander by Andrew Pickens, who fought in almost all the major Revolutionary Battles in South Carolina.

The City of Spartanburg was founded in 1787 and incorporated in 1831. The 1850 US Census population of the City of Spartanburg was 1,176. Today, the City of Spartanburg has the 12^th largest population in the state of South Carolina. The 2010 US Census places the population at 37,013, and a 2019 population estimate of 37,39. Spartanburg County’s 1790 US Census placed the population at 8,800. The 2010 US Census had Spartanburg County’s population at 284,307. It is estimated that the 2019 Spartanburg County population was close to 320,000.

Spartanburg’s economy was largely been based on textiles up until the 1960s. At this time, Spartanburg’s industrial composition has evolved as the textile industry has seen significant reductions in manufacturing due to less expensive foreign imported textiles nationwide. The once predominant textile industry has been taken over by automotive, automotive accessories, and healthcare. The largest two private employers in Spartanburg are Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System with 9,000 employees, and Walmart with 925 employees. 

Cultural Attractions in Spartanburg: 

-Ballet Spartanburg has hosted over 22 national and international ballet companies.

-The Hub City Farmers’ Market, held during the summer on Saturday mornings from 6:00am until Noon at Magnolia Street Train Station.

-Retrofest, held the first Saturday in February is reportedly the Southeast’s largest disco festival held at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium.

-Spring Fling, is an artist’s festival held in May. 

-Fourth of July Red, White and Boom, festival with music and fireworks held at Barnet Park.

-The Annual Sidewalk Arts Show, an art exhibition held in October.

The International Festival, show cases culture and other cuisines from around the world held at Barnet Park in October.

Music on Main, is a street concert held April through August every Thursday in downtown Spartanburg. 

The Greek Festival, held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church offering Greek food and Greek cultural activities every spring. 

Festifall, is historical reenactments and demonstrations of early life in the 18^th century at the Walnut Grove Plantation in October.

Taste of the Backcountry, a historical event held in April at the Price House, featuring food and historic demonstrations.

The Hub City Hog Fest, is held in April in downtown Spartanburg and is a barbecue cooking and competition. 

Spartanburg Music Trail ,which is a trail noting signs in downtown Spartanburg recognizing local musicians.

Sports

-The Carolina Panthers hold their training camp each year at Wofford College.

-Wofford College sponsors The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas each year at Wofford’s Gibbs Stadium.

-Collegiate sports programs from the USC Upstate, Spartanburg Methodist College, and Wofford College all have versatile sports programs for men and women’s team sports. 

-Converse College which has been a traditional women’s college is going co-ed, however, it currently offers NCAA Division II women’s sports program.
