The origin of the name Wade Hampton – Wade Hampton III (03/28/1818 – 04/11/1902) is the namesake for Wade Hampton CDP. Wade Hampton III was a South Carolina Governor, United States Senator, Confederate Army Lieutenant General, and planter. He was the grandson of Wade Hampton (reportedly born 1751 – 02/04/1835), a soldier, politician, and planter. Wade Hampton I was an American Revolutionary War hero, United States Congressman from South Carolina, a Major General during the War of 1812, and a planter.

The Cherokee Indians were the first recorded inhabitants of the future Wade Hampton area. The entire western part of South Carolina was designated the Cherokee Indian’s Territory prior to the American Revolution. This was the Cherokee people’s hunting grounds. The Cherokee Indians allied with the British during the American Revolution. Consequently, in 1777 the territory was taken from the Cherokee people and added to the state of South Carolina. The former Cherokee territory was then open for homesteading by settlers of European origin.
