Much too often we focus on the members who have gone outside the governing documents with regard to architectural or landscaping issues. Recognizing members who go beyond the requirements in an overall positive way can be a powerful tool in how a community looks and how members act. If it be recognizing entire yards in a single family home association or balconies in condominiums, most members who go the extra mile appreciate recognition. Many communities will post Yard of the Month in their newsletter or website. Several associations have gotten small signs to place in the yard for the entire month as additional recognition. This can foster friendly competition among neighbors. This can also have a positive effect by inspiring others in the community to make extra efforts on their yard, balcony, patio or whatever can be recognized as going above and beyond.
